Hope this isn't asked on a weekly basis. I did some searches but so little turned up I'm suspecting I picked horrible search terms.

Anyways, I recently invested in a laptop and installed SDC and through it GalCivII (incl. DA). Then I realized I had forgotten to change the GalCivII installation path to my data drive prior to installation.

I could uninstall and redownload/install, of course. But that seems a waste of your bandwidth to say the least. I also read that I could make an archive/backup and restore from that, but what the post didn't mention was whether I would be able to define the restore path or not.

The end goal here is to have moved GalCivII from c:\program files\... to D:\Games while retaining SDC's ability to check for and install updates for it.

It wouldn't be as simple as 1) Change the installation path in SDC and 2) move files to new location manually, would it?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure, so I'll tell you the way I know since that should work.

  1. Start SDC and go to Tools -> Settings -> General
  2. Under the Installation section, make sure that "Prompt to enter an installation directory" is checked.
  3. Select GalCiv II from the Games list.
  4. Right-click and select Archive Application -> Entire Application
  5. When prompted, have it archive all the modules.
  6. Once that's done, uninstall GalCiv II via SDC.
  7. Now, right-click on GalCiv II again and select Restore Archive.
  8. Select GalCiv II from the list and click Restore.
  9. SDC will prompt you on where you want to install the game to.
  10. That should do it.

I have a similar and yet different problem. I need to return my new computer to be replaced by a new one. I already have stardock and my games installed on my current new computer. Is there a easy way to transfer it using an external hard disk or should I just uninstall from the existing new computer and download everything again when I get the replacement?

I'll venture a guess.

- Archive on current computer
- Copy backup folder to external drive
- Install SDC on new computer
- (Optional) Copy archive folder from external drive to the same subfolder under SDC as you originally copied from
- Start SDC and right click to restore and pick the archive (if you did previous step) or click browse to locate the backup archive on your external drive.

As I said, I'm guessing. Wait for official response unless you are able to test.

What he said.

Pretty much the same procedure as I outlined above. Just burn the archive file to a CD/DVD or move it to an external drive, copy it over to the new PC and restore via SDC.

I've got yet another variant on this problem. My old computer is toast. Graphics card fried, motherboard... Well, you get the point. Fortunately my email's all in Exchange elsewhere on the net, so I haven't lost my GCII serial numbers. To add to the trickiness of the problem the old machine is XP and a new one would have to be Vista (gnash, gnash). Is it possible to reinstall on the as-yet theoretical new laptop using the old serial numbers, and if so, how? I've had a search through the forums about this but maybe I haven't been looking hard enough?
